IWED2023 - An Interview with Jala Abousaif

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

To support our article for International Women in Engineering Day, we, of course, spoke to one of Occuity's talented development engineers, Jala Abousaif, who joined Occuity in 2022, to get her perspective on why she chose to pursue a career in engineering and why she believes more women should not be put off following their dreams.

Embrace your uniqueness and use it to your advantage. Your ideas, skills, and contributions are invaluable.

Describe your role at Occuity?

As a Development Engineer, my role involves driving the advancement of our ophthalmic medical devices. Collaborating closely with a diverse and skilled multidisciplinary team, I actively participate in various stages of the product development process, including ideation, prototyping, testing, and refinement. Together, we strive to create impactful and accessible healthcare solutions that improve the lives of patients worldwide.

What inspired you to choose Engineering as a career?

Engineering, to me, represents the perfect marriage between creativity and problem-solving. From an early age, I was fascinated by the intricate interplay of scientific principles and the opportunity to apply them in practical ways.

Growing up in the Egyptian community, I witnessed a society grappling with deep-rooted misconceptions and a resistance to change. Pursuing a career in engineering allowed me to not only indulge my passion for scientific exploration but also become a catalyst for positive transformation.

The field of engineering offers endless possibilities for innovation, and it empowers individuals to make a tangible difference in people's lives. I was captivated by the notion of using my skills to develop advanced technologies that enhance healthcare, uplift communities, and create a more equitable world. This vision, coupled with my natural inclination towards problem-solving and my desire to contribute to the greater good, solidified my decision to embark on a career in engineering.

Did you encounter any obstacles while you pursued your career?

Undoubtedly, my journey in pursuing a career in engineering presented its fair share of obstacles. Coming from a society where traditional gender roles and misconceptions prevailed, I faced scepticism and discouragement from those around me when I expressed my aspirations. Many dismissed my ambitions as unrealistic or inappropriate for a woman.

Be prepared for challenges and setbacks along the way. Engineering is a demanding discipline that requires perseverance and a growth mindset.

Additionally, adapting to a new cultural and educational environment when I moved to the UK for my studies posed its own set of obstacles. Navigating the academic landscape and developing independence, at the age of 17, demanded resilience and a commitment to my goals. Despite these hurdles, I remained undeterred and maintained a strong work ethic, consistently striving for excellence in all my pursuits.

To anyone considering a career in engineering, I would offer the following advice:
